More detail
Softeners are sized in grains of hardness removed between regenerations. A larger household or very hard water needs more resin and a larger tank, which raises the price. A metered control valve that regenerates based on actual use, rather than a timer, costs a little more but saves salt and water over its life.
Installation ties into the main line where water enters the home and needs a drain for regeneration discharge, so plumbing access affects labor. Salt is the main ongoing cost, typically a few bags a month depending on hardness and usage.
A softener treats hardness, not contaminants like PFAS, lead, or bacteria. If your water test shows those, the softener is paired with carbon, RO, or UV rather than used on its own.
